Seventh Page: Plays of Revenge

The concept of revenge is found in the plays "Trifles", "Words, Words, Words", and "Hamlet".

In the play "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell, readers learn about a conflict that has occurred in a normal home. Mr. Wright was mysteriously found dead next to his wife and his wife doesn't talk about what has happened. All the major characters try to figure out what has happened and the two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters make the shocking discovery. The women found a dead bird with its neck snapped in an unnatural way. This led the ladies to assume that Mr. Wright killed Mrs. Wright's bird, which led to her act of revenge. Out of rage, Mrs. Wright killed her husband with a rope because he killed the only thing she cared about. It seems as though this act of rage on behalf of Mrs. Wright does not seem to regretted and she was quick to kill her husband. Although killing someone is not justifiable, I can sympathize with Mrs. Wright because she had no kids and was in a trapped relationship with her husband. That bird was the closest thing to happiness for her.

In the play "Words, Words, Words" written by David Ives, we learn that there are three monkeys put in confinement with typing on a typewriter as a means to be "freed". They are given the task to type the play "Hamlet", which seems like an impossible task. One of the monkeys, Milton, comes up with a plan of revenge. He is the irrational character that has a drastic plan to get revenge on their captor, Dr. Rosenbaum. Milton's plan is to give Dr. Rosenbaum a taste of his own medicine and try to poison him in a means of varying of scenarios. Milton doesn't seem hesitant or regretful because he is set giving payback. I can sympathize with his wishes because the monkeys were all put to work against their will doing something they are unaware of.

In the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, the protagonist Hamlet has reason to believe his uncle, Claudius, was the cause of his father's death. His uncle killed his father to gain power over the throne in a sneaky and conniving way. As a result, Hamlet decides to avenge his father and get revenge on Claudius by killing him. At first Hamlet is hesitant about killing his uncle, but for the wrong reasons. He wants Claudius to suffer and not go to heaven, so he finds a way to kill his uncle in a better way. Hamlet not only kills Claudius, but also other significant characters in the story. He shows no signs of remorse and does not regret his unjustifiable actions. I cannot sympathize with Hamlet because although he has lost his father in an unfair way, the crimes he has committed against other people are unforgivable.
